The purposes of this research are to learn about the following topics
which are namely: First topic is the evolution of terrorist network in Southeast Asia in
utilizing social media to gain an advantage on Information Operation (IO) and the
spread of Violent Extremism (VE). Second topic is the necessity to increase
preventive measures on VE from the government in order to prepare for the dynamic
global economy. This research will be directed at analyzing the pros/cons and the
effects of VE from the points of view of vulnerable countries in this region namely:
Malaysia, Indonesia, The Philippines, and Thailand. After the research, it was concluded
that two suggestions should be presented to vulnerable countries which are namely:
First suggestion is we should place importance on deterrence and suppression
measures by establishing special laws on counter terrorism and ideologies on extremism
that are able to terminate or disrupt the use of social media to communicate between
terrorist organizations and individuals that are vulnerable to becoming home-grown
terrorists or carry out lone wolf operations. Second suggestion is for security organizations
in vulnerable countries to have the authority to classify groups that are considered
regional terrorist organizations and have related laws in preventing the spread of
extremist ideologies in the region.
