ABSTRACT
Title: Review of Indo-Thai-Myanmar Economic & Security co-operation
and possibilities for the future.
Name : Air Commodore Sunil Kashinath Vidhate, India (Indian Air Force),
NDC Class 59.
Field: Economics and Security
The aim of the research is to review the current status of economic and
security engagements of Indo-Thai-Myanmar cooperation in the
background of historical perspective and geographical commonalities and to
recommend the way forward in view of prevailing domestic and regional
environment, coupled with geo-political implications.
The hypothesis being pursued in the research is that in the background of
strong bonding and commonalities rendered by trade, cultural and religious
exchanges spanning more than two millennia between the three countries,
coupled with geographical similarity with all its implications, current status
of their economic and security cooperation appears far short of exploiting
the full potential of the economic and geo-political environment existing in
these countries and surrounding region. As such, there is a need to identify
the ways to enhance this cooperation in the future.
The research methodology is by qualitative research method. Information/
data obtained from embassies & their websites, libraries, periodical
publications/journals, e-books, government publications/polices, views of
think tanks & subject experts as well as information gathered from study
tours within Thailand and regions bordering Myanmar has been utilized.
The study has revealed that the existing cooperation between the three
countries on bilateral and more so, on trilateral level, both on economic and
security fronts is well below the potential. Based on these findings the paper
lists out suggestions for enhanced cooperation both at bilateral and trilateral
levels before giving final recommendations focused on only trilateral level.
