Abstract
Title: Myanmar’s smart diplomacy for international relations
with world’s Powers
Field: Strategy
Name: Colonel Myo Khine Course: NDC Class: 66
The US, a powerful nation, has become the unipolar superpower
since the end of the Cold War, prioritizing its own goals and manipulating
other nations in international affairs. Myanmar, situated between China
and India, faces the risk of losing its sovereignty if its foreign policy is
not implemented with appropriate tact. To counter China's growing
influence in Asia, the US has implemented the Indo-Pacific strategy and
used various tactics to exert influence over Southeast Asia, including
Myanmar.
Myanmar’s foreign policy is an integral aspect of national
strategy, adhering to principles of peaceful coexistence and maintaining
diplomatic ties with major powers such as the US, Russia, China, India,
and other regional nations. However, there are still weaknesses in
Myanmar's foreign policy. The US-Myanmar relationship dates back to
the Konbaung era, but relations worsened after the 1988 upheavals. In
2021, the State Administration Council period saw worsening relations
between Myanmar and Western nations, particularly the US, which
provided backing to the terrorist group NLD.
China has been using its clout to exert influence over the parties
engaged in the border dispute since 2021, with China's longer-term goal
being to dismantle the anti-junta opposition. Myanmar must modify and
enhance its foreign policy to preserve internal security, grow its economy,
ii
and strengthen its diplomatic ties with other nations. This paper examines
Myanmar's smart diplomacy for international relations with world powers
and the requirements for Myanmar's government to adapt its foreign
policy by learning the stances of other Asian countries like Thailand and
Vietnam.
