Abstract Title India - ASEAN Stakeholder Cooperation to Manage Non-Conventional Maritime Threats in Waters adjoining Western Approaches to the Malacca Straits Field Politics Name Cmde Aby Mathew (IN) Course NDC Class 66 Non-conventional Maritime Threats continue to manifest themselves with an upward trajectory in the Southeast Asian Region. The Staits of Malacca and Singapore are a globally critical waterway and safety of this waterway is of international concern. The Malacca Straits Patrol initiative covers the waterways themselves, but the Western Approaches, a region from which maritime threats have the propensity to emerge and project into the Malacca Staits, is not covered. This research brings out that countries located in the periphery of the Westen Approaches to the Malacca Staits and the Straits of Malacca and Singapore, have the responsibility and adequate maritime capability to ensure the maritime security of the region, in a cooperative manner. The core recommendations of the study are capacity enhancement by stakeholders to address capability shortfalls, technical ability for which is available in the region, and extension of the MSP Initiative to include Myanmar and India to plug coverage gaps in the Western Approaches, that have emerged as presently existing.
