Abstract
Title Approaches of the Thai Armed Forces in response to the
Emerging Technology in the Future Warfare

This study examines the influence of emerging technologies on the
trajectory of future warfare, focusing on strategic approaches adopted by major
powers and Southeast Asian or ASEAN countries. It posits that cyber capabilities,
unmanned vehicles, artificial intelligence (AI), and quantum technology are pivotal
factors shaping the nature of future conflicts. Both state and non-state actors are
increasingly utilizing these technologies, as evidenced in contemporary conflicts such
as the South China Sea disputes, the Russia-Ukraine War, the Myanmar conflict, and
the Israel-Hamas war. These engagements highlight the strategic adoption of low-cost
technology operated through cyberspace, fostering strategic resilience and tactical
adaptability, and providing advantages over adversaries reliant on high-cost
conventional warfare technology.
The research underscores that future warfare will be characterized by a
symbiotic relationship between physical world engagements and cyber warfare, with
both conducted simultaneously and inextricably linked. Warfighting functions will
increasingly be managed through cyberspace, leading to system-of-systems and
system-to-system warfare. The study emphasizes the necessity for Network Centric
Operations (NCOs) to be robust, secure, and agile, enhancing command and control
down to the lowest echelons. A SWOT analysis reveals strengths, weaknesses,
opportunities, and threats relevant to the Thai armed forces. Given limited budgets,
burgeoning multidisciplinary knowledge, and the rapidly evolving technological
landscape, the Thai armed forces are encouraged to adopt an aggressive strategy
through an ‘Emerging Technology Ecosystem.’ This approach centers on
collaboration with research and development institutions and national defense
companies, facilitating knowledge exchange, research and development, and training.
