การวิจัยเรื่อง การพัฒนาขอนแก่นไมซ์ซิตี้ (Khonkaen Mice City) เพื่อสนับสนุน
อุตสาหกรรมการท่องเที่ยว มีวัตถุประสงค์เพราะว่าปัจจุบันในประเทศเทศมีศูนย์กลางการจัดการ
ท่องเที่ยว MICE ที่ร่วมมือกันกับสำนักงานส่งเสริมการจัดการประชุมและนิทรรศการ (องค์กรมหาชน)
หรือ สสปน. อยู่ 4 เมือง คือเมืองเชียงใหม่ เมืองภูเก็ต เมืองพัทยา และกรุงเทพมหานคร ซึ่งทั้ง 4 เมือง
นี้ต่างก็เป็นเมืองแห่งการท่องเที่ยวอันดับต้นๆ มีศักยภาพในการจัดการท่องเที่ยว ประชุม สัมมนา และ
จัดนิทรรศการเป็นอย่างดี จึงถูกยกระดับเป็น “MICE CITY” ของประเทศและภูมิภาคเอเชียตะวันออก
เฉียงใต้ หรือ “World Class of Convention and Exhibition” และ “MICE Destination of Asia”
จากการสนับสนุนจากภาครัฐบาล (มาโนชพรหมปัญโญ, 2553) หลักจากนั้นสำนักงานส่งเสริมการจัด
ประชุมและนิทรรศการ (องค์กรมหาชน) หรือ สสปน. จึงได้เปิดตัว MICE เมืองแห่งการประชุมสัมมนา
ในภูมิภาคอีสานขึ้น จังหวัดขอนแก่นในฐานะ MICE CITY ที่ 5 ของประเทศไทยที่ได้รับการคัดเลือกเป็น
เมืองที่มีความพร้อมในการจัดประชุมสัมมนาที่ดีที่สุดในเมืองไทย
จังหวัดขอนแก่นมีศักยภาพในการศูนย์กลางทางการค้าและการศึกษาในภาคอีสาน
ของประเทศไทย แลเป็นแหล่งท่องเที่ยวยอดนิยมสำหรับนักท่องเที่ยวทีเดินทางมาเพื่อสัมผัส
วัฒนธรรม และวิถีชีวิตแบบดั้งเดิม ไม่ว่าจะเป็นแหล่งผลิตผ้าไหมมัดหมี่ชื่อดังพร้อมทั้งเป็น
ศูนย์กลางการปฏิบัติงานตาม “แผนงานพัฒนาแนวพื้นที่เศรษฐกิจ”และเชื่อมต่อประเทศไทย
พม่า เวียดนามเข้าด้วยกัน เป็นเมืองศูนย์กลางการค้าและการขนส่ง และเป็นประตูสู่ภูมิภาคอินโด
จีนและประเทศจีนตอนใต้ ซึ่งปัจจัยที่กล่าวมาข้างต้นทำให้ขอนแก่นได้พัฒนาเป็นเมือง MICE ที่
สำคัญแห่งหนึ่งของประเทศไทย ขอนแก่นยังมีศักยภาพในการรองรับ ผู้ที่เดินทางมาร่วมอีเวนต์
ทางธุรกิจจำนวนมาก ตั้งแต่สนามบินนานาชาติขอนแก่นไปจนถึงศูนย์การประชุมของ
มหาวิทยาลัยขอนแก่นที่พรั่งพร้อมไปด้วยสิ่งอำนวยความสะดวกที่เปี่ยมไปด้วยคุณภาพ ปรับแต่ง
ได้ตามความต้องการ และให้ความคุณค่าแก่ผู้จัดงาน นอกจากนี้โรงแรมระดับ 4 และ 5 ดาวส่วน
ใหญ่ของจังหวัดก็เป็นอีกทางเลือกที่คุ้มค่าแม้ว่าจังหวัดขอนแก่นจะมีศักยภาพและมีความพร้อมใน
การเป็นศูนย์กลางของการจัดประชุมสัมมนาและการจัดนิทรรศการ/การแสดงสินค้าของภูมิภาค
แต่ยังคงมีปัญหาหลักที่สำคัญที่ต้องการการพัฒนาและปรับปรุง คือแหล่งท่องเที่ยวทางธรรมชาติข
ที่มีจำนวนน้อยและขาดจุดเด่นรวมไปถึงปัญหาการร่วมมือกันของภาครัฐและเอกชน ดังนั้น จาก
ความเป็นมาและความสำคัญของการท่องเที่ยวรูปแบบ MICE ในจังหวัดขอนแก่นดังที่กล่าวมา
ข้างต้นนั้น ผู้วิจัยจึงมีความสนใจที่จะศึกษาแนวทางการพัฒนาขอนแก่นไมซ์ซิตี้ (Khonkaen
Mice City) เพื่อสนับสนุนอุตสาหกรรมการท่องเที่ยวได้อีกทางหนึ่ง
