การศึกษาค้นคว้าในเรื่อง “สมเด็จพระเจ้าบรมวงศ์เธอ กรมพระยาด ารงราชานุภาพ กับ
พระกรณียกิจด้านการทหาร” มีวัตถุประสงค์ที่ส าคัญคือเพื่อเผยแพร่พระเกียรติคุณและพระประวัติ
ด้านการทหารของพระองค์ นอกจากน้นัจากการที่พระองค์ไดร้ับการขนานพระนามว่า “พระบิดาแห่งประวัติศาสตร์ของชาติไทย” ตลอดจนได้รับการยกย่องให้เป็น “บุคคลส าคัญของโลก” คน
แรกของประเทศไทย ผู้ศึกษาค้นคว้าจึงได้น าเสนอพระกรณียกิจในด้านอื่น ๆ เพื่อเป็นประโยชน์
ส าหรับผู้ที่ต้องการน าไปประกอบการศึกษา ค้นคว้า อ้างอิง และเสริมความรู้ทางประวัติศาสตร์
การจัดท าเอกสารในคร้ังน้ีผู้ศึกษาได้ค้นคว้าเอกสารต่าง ๆ เป็นจ านวนมากที่ได้กล่าวถึงพระประวัติ
ของสมเด็จฯ กรมพระยาด ารงราชานุภาพ โดยได้เน้นไปที่พระกรณียกิจด้านการทหาร ซึ่งเป็นเรื่อง
ที่น่าศึกษา น่าสนใจ และมีความส าคัญอยู่มาก เพราะเป็นเรื่องที่ท าให้เราได้รู้ว่าถึงแม้พระองค์ทรง
รับราชการทหารอยู่เพียง ๑๕ ปีก็ตาม พระองค์ทรงสร้างสรรค์และจัดวางรากฐานในกิจการทาง
ทหารไว้เป็นจ านวนมาก
สมเด็จฯ กรมพระยาด ารงราชานุภาพ ทรงเริ่มเขา้รับการศึกษาที่โรงเรียนนายร้อยเมื่อปี
พ.ศ. ๒๔๑๘ และรับราชการคร้ังแรกในตา แหน่งบงัคบักองแตรวง หลงัจากน้นั ทรงรับราชการ
ทหารในหลาย ๆ ต าแหน่ง อาทิ ผู้บังคับทหารม้า ราชองครักษ์ประจ าพระองค์พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ทรงเป็นผู้รับพระบรมราชโองการ ทรงว่าการกองแก้วจินดา ทรงเป็นผู้
บังคับการกรมทหารมหาดเล็ก และต าแหน่งสุดท้ายทางทหารของพระองค์ ทรงได้รับโปรดเกล้าฯให้เป็นผู้บัญชาการทหารบกพระองค์แรกของกองทัพบกไทยในช่วงปี พ.ศ.๒๔๓๐ - พ.ศ.๒๔๓๓
พระกรณียกิจทางทหารที่ส าคัญที่สมเด็จฯ กรมพระยาด ารงราชานุภาพ ได้ทรงเข้าไป
เกี่ยวข้องได้แก่ การเปลี่ยนรูปแบบการจัด และวิธีการปกครองบังคับบัญชา ตลอดจนการจัด
การศึกษาในโรงเรียนของกรมทหารมหาดเล็ก และการฝึ กหัดผู้ที่จะเป็นนายร้อย นายสิบ ในฐานะที่
พระองค์ทรงเป็นผู้บังคับการกรมทหารมหาดเล็กฯ การจดั ต้งัโรงเรียนแผนที่ตามพระราโชบายของ
พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว นอกจากน้ันพระองคย์งัทรงมีบทบาทส าคญั ในการ
เปลี่ยนแปลงกิจการทางทหารของเมืองไทยคร้ังใหญ่ในปีพ.ศ. ๒๔๓๐ จนได้รับโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้
ด ารงต าแหน่งที่ส าคัญคือผู้บัญชาการกองทัพบก ตลอดจนท าหน้าที่ปราบปรามผู้ก่อความไม่สงบ
“อั้งยี่”ในกรุงเทพมหานครเมื่อปี พ.ศ. ๒๔๓๒
จากการรวบรวมและเรียบเรียงพระประวัติและพระกรณียกิจทางทหารของ สมเด็จฯ กรมพระยาด ารงราชานุภาพ จะเห็นได้ว่าตลอดพระชนม์ชีพของพระองค์ ทรงบ าเพ็ญคุณประโยชน์
ให้กับกองทัพและประเทศชาติอย่างใหญ่หลวง ทรงเป็นนักการทหารที่สามารถเป็นพระปรมาจารย์
องค์ปฐมทางการศึกษาให้แก่กองทัพไทย อนั เป็นอจัฉริยะที่หาไดย้ากยิ่ง ซ่ึงสามารถกล่าวไดว้่า
พระองค์ทรงเป็น บุคคลส ำคัญของโลก อย่างสมบูรณ์แบบ ยากที่จะหาผู้อื่นเปรียบเสมือนได้อีกท้งั
ยังทรงประสิทธิประศาสน์วิทยาการที่ทรงรอบรู้ถ่ายทอดให้ผู้อื่นได้อย่างดีเยี่ยมอีกด้วย พระองค์
ทรงรับราชการด้วยความจงรักภักดีต่อประเทศชาติและพระมหากษัตริย์ ทรงซื่อสัตย์สุจริต ไม่เคย
ค านึงถึงผลประโยชน์ส่วนพระองค์เลย พระองค์ทรงได้ยึดหลัก “ตั้งใจดี มีความซื่อ ถือหน้าที่”
ไวอ้ย่างมนั่ คง และคงเป็นเพราะหลกัท้งั ๓ ประการน้ีที่พระองค์ได้ทรงงานตลอดพระชนม์ชีพมา
ดว้ยความซื่อสัตยส์ ุจริต ต้งัพระทยัทรงงานอย่างไม่เห็นแก่ความเหนื่อยยาก และทรงภาคภูมิพระทัย
ในพระองคเ์องเป็นอย่างยิ่ง พระองคท์ รงตรัสเสมอว่าการเป็นผูน้ า น้นั มีคุณค่าใหญ่หลวง
โดยเฉพาะนักการทหารที่ดีย่อมจะต้องมีการพัฒนาปรับปรุงตัวเองอยู่เสมอ น าประสบการณ์และ
ความรอบรู้ท้งัปวงที่มีอยู่มาเผยแพร่และสร้างประโยชน์ต่อกองทพั ประชาชน และประเทศชาติ

The main objective of research entitled “H.R.H. Prince Damrong Rajanupab’s
Activities Associated With The Military” is to distinguish and honor his military life
as well as his other outstanding accomplishments. Prince Damrong was one of the
forefathers in history and domestically known as the ‘Father of Thai History and
Archaeology’ and the first Thai to be globally recognized by UNESCO as one of the
most important person in the world during his time. This research also gives details of
the Prince’s other important achievements which can be used for academic purposes
such as reference and further study to enhance historical knowledge. Many
documents on the life and memory of Prince Damrong, especially on his military
activities have been gathered to perfect this study. His relatively short 15-year
military career makes this subject an intriguing one to study because his achievements
are still within the army’s structure in today’s contemporary world.
Prince Damrong entered his military education as a cadet at Royal Military
Academy, after which he served his half-brother, King Chulalongkorn (King Rama
V) as a lieutenant in the Royal Household Guards Regiment. The young Prince served
many positions while in the Army, began his career in the Army Band, then
Commander of Calvary Company, Royal Aide-de-Camp to the King, Receiver of the
Royal Command, Commander of Artillery Unit, Commander of King’s Own Body
Guards and became the first Army Commander-in-Chief in 1887.
Prince Damrong’s activities associated with the military include restructuring
the Royal Guards Unit. Setting up and raising the level of military education and
training. Among his many works was the establishment of the Royal Survey
Department. In 1887, the Prince was involved in restructuring the Ministry of
Defense which made him the very first Army Commander-in-Chief. In 1889, Prince
Damrong was also involved in a major operation in Bangkok against violence
Chinese hard-liners called “Ung-Yee”.
The research on H.R.H. Prince Damrong Rajanupab’s military activities was
part of the Prince’s total commitment and dedication to his country. His whole life is dedicated and honored by the memory his living accomplishments, of a man who
passed his way in life, leaving a remarkable legacy for the country and his beloved
monarch. Education was Prince Damrong’s true love and establishment of military
educational system was the highlight of his earlier successes. It can be said that the
Prince was truly a remarkable individual who deservedly was honored to receive
World's Most Important Persons list, making him the first Thai to receive this
accolade. The Prince’s footsteps ought be studied in order to provide inspirations to
Thai Citizen as a role model through his three principles in life, of goodwill, honesty
and discipline. As an extraordinaire fellow human being, H.R.H. Prince Damrong
Rajanupab’s diligent and selflessness attitude should be an example for anyone to
follow. He always pronounced that being a leader is extremely prestigious, especially
those who are in the army, as these individuals must always continuously strive for
self-improvement.
