This research on “ Tendency of Korean reunification” is conducted as part of the
research paper for the Joint Staff College class 48. The purposes of this research are firstly to
study the roles of the US in political and security issues in the post Cold War towards the
reunification of North Korea and South Korea; and secondly to study the development and to
analyze the possibility of the Korean reunification.
Peace and security in the Korean peninsula is vital to countries in East Asia region and
the adjacent regions including Thailand which is situated 3000 miles away from the Korean
peninsula. Korean reunification is significantly importance for security and international relation
system. The methodology used in this research is done through qualitative research under two
hypotheses. The first hypothesis is that the presence of the US military forces in South Korea is
considered as an obstacle to Korean reunification. The second hypothesis is that Korean
reunification without political change in North Korea will have special characteristic as “one
country with two systems”.
Under the international relations theory framework applied for the analysis of this
research, namely the ‘‘national interest theory’’ and the ‘‘balance of power theory’’, the result of
this research has supported both mentioned hypotheses. This research has led to the expectation that the situation in the Korean peninsula has a tendency to develop to a more secure and
promising direction. In addition, the most important factor for the success of Korean reunification
is that all participants and involved actors need to be sincere and trustworthy in handling and
solving this problem under ‘win-win situation’ which is beneficial to all participants.
